Lisgar C.I. Shifts to Remote Learning

Lisgar C.I. Shifts to Remote Learning
Posted on 04/19/2021

Dear Lisgar Families,

I hope that you had a good Spring Break. Due to the provincial order, the school will be closed to in-person learning beginning on Monday, April 19th, which coincides with the start of quadmester 4. During this period, students will learn remotely from home and will not attend school, with the exception of students in some special education program classes (see below for more information). Students received their quadmester 4 schedules, via their school board email account, on Friday, April 9th.

Monday, April 19th

Monday, April 19th will follow a modified schedule with a focus on asynchronous learning. The school staff will be meeting at the start of the day to prepare for remote learning and arrange for the distribution of technology where needed. Teachers will also use this day to adjust their programming, reach out to students and families, update lessons on their online learning platform, ensure access to passwords and provide information about class schedules.

Families should also prepare for remote learning by doing the following:

● Plan the day using the school day schedule and routine;
●
Review instructions for  signing in to the Google Classroom, or the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE);
 Learn more about remote learning netiquette; and
●
Take some time to watch these videos about Google Meet and the VLE.

You can find instructions about how to access the Google Classroom and other information about remote learning here.

Remote Learning Schedule

Beginning on Tuesday, April 20th, the daily schedule will be modified for the period of the closure and both cohorts (A and B) will learn together.

●
Students will have both subjects taught each day in two 112.5 minute blocks of instruction.
●
Attendance will be taken at the start of each learning block.
●
The teacher will provide parents and guardians with more detailed information about the course/ subject schedule and will post updates and instructions for students in the VLE.

The following school day schedule will be in place:

Remote Student Support

Access to Technology and/or Wifi

If you require access to a Chromebook, the school has a limited number available and may be able to lend one to you. If you do not have access to the internet because it is not available where you live, there are a small number of hotspots available. Please email Mr. Lalonde if your child needs access to technology – richardj.lalonde@ocdsb.ca and we will do our best to accommodate your request.

Special Education - Specialized Program Classes

All students with special education needs, including students in specialized DSP program class will attend remotely on April 19th.  This week, I will be working with educators in the DSP class to review the teaching and learning opportunities according to each student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) and work with families to develop a plan for remote learning during the closure period. Given the current provincial directives, there will be increased emphasis on supporting remote learning.  Only those students with intensive and complex special education needs, such as those with developmental disabilities (DD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or multiple exceptionalities, will be considered to attend during the provincial school closure period.

For students who are deemed to require the accommodation of in-person learning and in order to ensure that the appropriate programming context is in place, a staggered entry plan will be developed, with the goal of having all students who require the accommodation for in-person learning attending by April 26, 2021. Families impacted by this will be contacted directly.

Please note that this does not include secondary students on credit pathways (e.g., gifted, learning disability, ASD secondary credit support, physical support) who will pivot to remote learning as per their timetable, effective April 19, 2021.

Thank you for your support and understanding as we work through this transition.

We look forward to a warm virtual welcome on April 19th.

Have a good weekend.

Yours truly,

Patsy Agard, Principal
