Special Programs

The International Advanced Placement Program (AP) allows students to receive equivalent credits for first-year courses at many universities in Canada, the United States, and other countries. Our courses offered at the Advanced Placement level include AP European History, AP French Language and Literature, AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition, AP Music Theory, AP Calculus AB, and AP Statistics. These courses have been reviewed, audited, and accredited by the International Advanced Placement Program allowing us to grant Advanced Placement credits. In addition to the eight Advanced Placement Courses offered in grades 11 and 12, we also offer AP Capstone. Lisgar Collegiate Institute is the only school in Eastern Ontario that offers AP Capstone, which is an innovative diploma program that provides students with an opportunity to engage in rigorous scholarly practice of the core academic skills necessary for successful university completion.

The OCDSB's Dual Support Specialized Program Class at Lisgar Collegiate Institute prepares students for the world of work and integration into the community. The OCDSB determines placement for this specialized program class.

The OCDSB's Specialized Gifted Program at the Secondary Level for grades 9 to 12, provides an enhanced learning experience for special education students identified as intellectually gifted. Our Special Education Program supports these students as well as those with other learning exceptionalities.

Lisgar Collegiate Institute offers a Specialist High-Skills Major (SHSM) program in Hospitality and Tourism with a focus on Food Preparation and Event Coordination. This program offers students courses to develop culinary skills, certifications towards employment, and opportunities to work with professionals in the field for preparation of a variety of careers in the industry.

Highlights

  • Our Fine Arts Department features one of the oldest secondary school symphony orchestras in Canada. Our ten performing ensembles continue to achieve high standards at local, provincial and national festivals. As the only non-arts school in the city with a string program, Lisgar Collegiate Institute’s music curricula includes full band, co-curricular choral and the strings programs. Our students’ talents are highlighted through our full band program, including two Jazz Bands, and the multiple quartet appearances throughout the City of Ottawa and for the federal government for various ceremonies and events. In alternating years we provide our students with a European performance tour or a full scale Broadway musical.

Each year our students earn medals in the Canadian Open Math Challenge, Ontario East Division and are invited to write the American Invitational Mathematics Examination. Our students consistently achieve high standing in the Ontario Association of Physics Teachers Contest, Sir Isaac Newton Physics Contest, the Avogadro, Chem 13 News Contest, and the University of Toronto National Biology Competition.

  • We offer a Classical and International Language Program that includes Latin and Spanish courses that allow students to take a sequence of three courses to learn and improve their language ability. No previous experience is required.
